Customers

This is the first screen visible after you start ECU Editor Pro and its main purpose is to manage your customers tuning data. Each customer record represents a different vehicle and all ECU data related to this particular vehicle including the original ROM image.

You can quickly sort customers by any of the field types displayed in the grid by clicking on the gray column header (see the green arrow). The active record and current field will be automatically highlighted (see the red arrow). You can edit the selected cell by double clicking with your mouse, pressing enter or using the Edit Record button from the DATABASE buttons. You can finish editing a record by moving away from it, pressing the enter button or clicking the Post Changes button. To modify the content of Notes section (see the blue arrow) you may simply click on it and start typing or double click on it to launch the editor window shown below.

Please note that this field is capable of displaying more than formatted text, you may use it to store pictures or embed other files for future reference (see the Insert menu). You can also load, save and print your notes.

After clicking the Add Record button to create a new customer the following dialog box will appear on your screen.

If you choose the first option make sure that your ECU interface cable is connected to your computer and to the vehicles appropriate connectors (see the Read ECU screen below). The second option allows you to load an image from a file stored on your computer.

The Read ECU screen has only two buttons Read and Save. After you click on the Read button you will be presented with choice of vehicles that ECU Editor Pro is currently supporting, make your selection and follow the prompts to retrieve the ECU image. Once you have successfully completed the Read ECU procedure click on the Save button and you will be prompted to enter some basic information about your customer (you will also be able to edit this information later if needed).

Jobs

Once you have obtained an ECU image and successfully created a customer record you may switch to the Jobs screen by clicking on the Jobs tab. To start a new job click on the Add Record button, please note that function of this button will change after you add the first job. The first job is created using the original ECU image (without any modifications) we encourage you to keep the original image for all customers. Each job has its own notes field that you can edit in the same way as described previously, you will be able to change all fields in a job record except the Created date and time field that is automatically populated to maintain chronological order for all jobs.

When you click on the Add Record button again another job will be created but this time you can choose to use original maps, maps from the last job or even a set of maps from another job on the same type of vehicle by selecting "From another job or customer" option in the New Job dialog.

If you selected the "From another job or customer" option the following screen will appear showing all compatible ECU images and jobs you have created before. Please note that unlike other programs ECU Editor Pro only modifies the known values for maps and tuning parameters, the rest of ECU image remains intact, thus it is safe to transfer the maps from another vehicle of the same type without disenabling or loosing factory security features.

To copy the maps firstly click on the customer record (see the red arrow) to display all jobs for this customer in the grid below (if there are no jobs available the grid will not show). Secondly select the job you want to use the maps from by double clicking on the desired record (see the green arrow). If you have changed your mind, you can click on the close button and cancel this operation.

Maps and Tuning Values

After you create a job you can start editing the maps by clicking on the EDIT MAPS button, the following screen will appear.

The list will contain different sections and headings depending on the make of vehicle being tuned. You can open as many maps at the same time as you wish by double clicking on the map caption or the tick box on its left hand side. You may expand and collapse any section by clicking on the small button next to the section name, you can also resize the window. Every open map will be indicated by the tick of the box in this list, you can close an open map in the same way as you have opened it or by using the close button on the map editing screen. It is possible to open more than one set of maps (more than one job from more than one customer) ECU Editor will trace all open windows to determine which editor screen belongs to which job, thus if you decide to close the map list screen all maps open from this list will be automatically closed.

After you finished working with maps and tuning values you may want to transfer the new settings to the ECU. To start this process make sure that your ECU interface cable is connected to your computer and to the vehicle and click on the Write to ECU button.

After clicking on the Write to ECU button all open map editor windows corresponding to the selected job will be automatically closed (to save all changes) and the above screen will appear. You can click on Write to start the ECU writing process immediately. The Compare feature is useful if you are not sure which set of maps the ECU is currently using, it will simply compare the set of maps from the selected job to maps stored inside the ECU without making any changes.

Map Editor

One of the most advanced features of ECU Editor Pro is its outstanding map editor. There are three different display modes depending on the size and type of maps. Standard 3D map editing mode is shown below.

In this mode the trace overlay is not enabled and you are only presented with the map values. By default the 3D graph is rotating you may freeze and resume its rotation by simply clicking on it with your mouse. You will notice that any selected map area will be indicated on the map itself, on the graph and on vertical and horizontal axis. Right mouse click will reveal the following pop-up menu.

Every time you close the map editor window all changes you have made are automatically saved, however you may choose to save the changes manually at any time by selecting the Save Map option. If you wish to revert to the previously saved version of this map select the Last Saved option, you may also revert to the original map values from this car ECU by selecting the Restore Original option. The remaining tracing options will be enabled only for maps that support this feature, if the selected map can be traced you will be able to view the trace from your last run by clicking on the Show Last Trace option or load the trace data from a file. You may also hide the active trace plot by selecting the Hide Trace option. The screen below shows a 3D map with an active trace overlay.

When working in the trace overlay mode it is important not to confuse the trace plot display with your current selection of values. As illustrated above the current selection is indicated by a blue cell background in the map and a yellow surface color on the graph (see the white arrows). The map values for which trace data is available have a yellow background on the map. You can click on any of the yellow background cells with your mouse (or select a cell and press the space button) to display the trace data available for this combination of engine load and RPM values (see the blue arrow). It is not uncommon to see many trace values for a single cell, the fields in the trace display table will vary depending on the type of vehicle, however in all cases both knock indications and user markers (refer to the Motorsport Logic ECU Scanner manual) will be clearly indicated by a different background colors. The overlay support is only available for 3D maps, however all other functions remain the same for 2D maps as shown below.

The only change in this display mode is the graph type, all shortcuts (as described later in this text) and features remain unchanged. In ECU Editor Pro all 1D maps (single values) are called Tuning Values and Limits and are presented in a single table that can be accessed by selecting Tuning Values and Limits from the maps selection list.

This is the simplest map editing mode, you will find that only the basic shortcuts are functional in this mode.
